So let’s get this out of the way in the beginning. Technically, it depends. There are a lot of factors that go into whether or not a couple is compatible, astrologically speaking.
One of the most important things to remember is that your sun sign (or the most common zodiac sign people talk about, which you can determine by your birthday) is not the only sign that matters. Your birth chart is full of nuances that affect your personality.
Your sun sign might be the crux of your identity, but things like your moon sign (your emotional identity) and your rising sign (the impression you give off) are hugely important as well.
We’re specifically talking about sun signs today, but if you know your moon and rising signs, you should pay attention to who they’re compatible with too.
Elements and Compatibility
As we discussed previously, all astrological signs can be categorized by their element, and fall under either earth, air, fire, or water.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) are nurturing and practical.
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) are cerebral and innovative.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) are bold and passionate.
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are emotional and introspective.
Generally speaking, you’ll find stronger compatibility between earth and water signs, and air and fire signs.
You could think of this in broad terms, like how certain elements make each other stronger (air feeds fire, and water and earth bond together) and certain elements work against each other (water puts fire out, fire scorches earth, and air plus either water or earth could equal destruction).
Sticking with someone of your own element, though, is typically a pretty safe bet, compatibility-wise.
Qualities and Compatibility
Even more interesting, though, are the qualities (sometimes called modalities) that each sign falls under. These qualities are cardinal, fixed, and mutable. And in this case, two signs of the same quality aren’t always the safest bet.
Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) can butt heads against each other. As these signs are all known for their visionary and leadership qualities, this couple can have some serious control issues.
Generally speaking, they tend to have the most harmonious relationships with fixed and mutable signs. That’s not to say two cardinal signs cannot be compatible, though, or even soulmates.
Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) are known for digging their heels into the ground. Their tenacious and stubborn nature can do wonders in some areas of their lives, but can cause challenges when matched with another fixed-sign partner.
Life might be a little easier if they’re paired up with a cardinal or mutable sign. But again, that doesn’t mean they can’t be compatible.
Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) are the most flexible and adaptable of the signs. They’re not always comfortable leading, so pairing up with another mutable sign might lead to indecision or stagnation.
They might feel more balanced when partnered up with a cardinal or fixed sign. But once again, that’s not a hard and fast rule.
So as you can see, there are actual rules that surround what signs are compatible with each other, and using them as a roadmap can take a lot of the guesswork out of things.
